Tokyo is one of the world’s busiest cities with the population being estimated at over 14 million in 2023. At only 2191 square kilometres (less than 0.6% of the total area of Japan), this figure makes it one of the most densely populated cities in the world. In 2023, Tokyo had 19.54 million international tourists, which was a record number, while the city saw approximately 474.66 million domestic tourists.

Goes without saying, this means there are thousands of hotels of all kinds and for all budgets that have mushroomed across the city. From capsule hotels to dormitories, and quaint little ryokans to lavish hotels. Most of these run at full capacity throughout the year, in particular through spring and fall.

For the luxury traveller, Tokyo can be an excellent choice and with a bit of planning, one can secure some of the most luxurious suites the city’s finest hotels have to offer. We spent spring, fall, and winter in Tokyo over the past 12 months, and narrowed down our picks to some of the finest hotel suites in the city to help you plan your next trip.

Modern Japanese Suite, Ritz Carlton, Tokyo

Starting with our most recent stay, we head to the iconic Ritz Carlton in Midtown Tokyo. Towering over Roppongi, this 53 storey hotel is synonymous with world class hospitality, old world charm, and that quintessential yet subtle Japanese aesthetic. Featuring 245 guest rooms with contemporary East-meets-West interior style, the hotel delivers a guest experience like no other. We were lucky enough to find ourselves in the Modern Japanese Suite, perched on the 48th floor, and unapologetically stunning and offering panoramic views of the southern Tokyo Bay area. Led by renowned Asia-based DESIGN STUDIO SPIN, the design emphasises horizontal lines, making the shimmering Tokyo skyline the room’s focal point. Generous windows create a sense that the skyline extends into the suite. The design draws inspiration from traditional Sukiya-style architecture, with tatami floors and wooden pillars, fostering a sense of calm and quiet. To add a modern touch, the suite features a black futon-style bed frame with a wood and leather platform, giving the bed a floating appearance. The ‘Modern Japanese Suite’ includes an intimate dining room and stylish living room, adorned in Kyoto Nishijin fabric. A 70-inch high-definition television swivels to separate the bedroom and living room, complemented by traditional floral-painted fusuma doors. Details like a black, hand-crafted bud vase and art photos on washi paper enhance the suite’s peaceful, chic atmosphere.

The dining options at the Ritz Carlton are just as impressive, featuring Héritage by Kei Kobayashi, helmed by Chef Kobayashi – the first Asian chef awarded three Michelin stars in France, and Hinokizaka, a magnificent Japanese restaurant offering elegant and authentic regional cuisine. The Bar deserves a special mention of its own, as the perfect place to enjoy the sunset as the floor to ceiling windows sometimes offer a sneaky peek of Mount Fuji in the distance and the bar team keeps you mesmerised with some of the city’s most elegantly crafted cocktails, each telling a story of its own.
